What are the dimensions of a business card?
Standard business cards measure 2" x 3.5" and are designed to easily be placed in pockets, wallets and card holders. While there are other sizes and mini cards now available, standard business card dimensions are the most common and most practical.
What is a bleed?
When designing and printing business cards using standard business card dimensions, it needs to be determined if the artwork requires a 'bleed'. A bleed is the term used when an ink color or colors run off the edge of the business card. To insure no white edges will be seen due to a bounce during cutting, extra color needs to be provided past the cut marks.
What size is the bleed for standard business card dimensions?
A bleed size normally provided is 1/8" past the 2" x3.5" card size. This would make your artwork for standard business card dimensions 2.25" x 3.75" since each side requires 1/8" bleed. You will also want to utilize a 'gutter'. A gutter should be approximately 1/4" - 3/8" around the inside edge of the card. The gutter prevents type from laying too close to the edge of the card where it might get trimmed accidentally.
Should I use crop marks?
It is always wise to provide 'crop marks' as well. Crop marks are small lines that are used as guides in each corner to show the printer where the cuts are intended to be made. This helps eliminate misunderstandings on the specific placement of the artwork.
